If you ever find yourself heading up up the coast on Hwy 101 toward Portland make absolutely sure to stop for lunch in Port Orford, Oregon at The Crazy Norwegian Fish and Chips restaurant. I stumbled on this completely by chance but WOW I am glad I stopped. I am very very picky about my fish and chips. The batter needs to be perfectly light and crisp, and the chips need to be just the right consistency too. Then there is the tartar sauce and the coleslaw, both of which should be simple to make…but are often store bought and just not tasty. Not the case here, and with the addition of a sweet and tangy separate dipping sauce the dish was perfect. I ordered the two piece fish lunch and added a coconut shrimp to my dish which was cooked to perfection.
The owner is a character and super friendly, clearly the locals eat here and she know most of the customers by name. I was beyond satiated after lunch but she talked me into a piece of house-made marionberry pie, and while I am not usually a desert eater I’m very glad I had this one!
Just around the corner from the restaurant and down the hill is a working waterfront with fishing boats coming and going. Doesn’t seem like the fish could be much fresher than this. The spot does have a website: https://the-crazy-norwegians-fish-and-chips.business.site
but it seems like they have been a bit too busy serving great food to update it recently.
